Chimney Rock Vacation

One of the perks of living and vacationing in the Lake Lure area of North Carolina is being able to get a bird’s eye view of the lake from the top of Chimney Rock.

The story of Chimney Rock Mountain begins in 1902 when Dr. Lucius B. Morse and his two brothers bought the mountain and 64 acres for $5,000. Dr. Morse and his brothers began developing a trail up the mountain so visitors could reach the summit of the Chimney. And in 1946, the plans for an elevator were developed to take people to the top. Three years later, the elevator was opened to the public, as well as an entrance and upper level parking lot.

Over time, Chimney Rock Park became a place of nature education as well as family fun, and through the support of the Morse family, the Carolina Mountain Lands Conservancy, The Nature Conservancy, and the Friends of Hickory Nut Gorge, it became an official North Carolina State Park in 2007.

You Oughta Be In Pictures

The beauty of Chimney Rock has received some attention from filmmakers, with the Park appearing in some notable movies including:

·      Last of the Mohican’s

·      Firestarter

Aside from the amazing views, The Park offers something for everyone. There are seven hiking trails from easy to moderate-strenuous, an Animal Discover Den where kids can learn about the natural wildlife at the Park, the Great Woodland Adventure Trail with 12 Discovery Stations, and a climbing tower for guests of all ages. If you’re ready to take things up a notch, the Park has partnered with Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School and offers rock climbing and rappelling adventures and instruction for individuals and groups.

The Park’s Sky Lounge Deli is open mid-March through November, and offers wraps, pizza, and ice cream, with an outdoor patio that let’s you take in the scenery. Or, you can bring a picnic from home, or contact the Old Rock Café in Chimney Rock Village to pre-order a hikers’ lunch you can take up the mountain.

There is SO much to see and do at Chimney Rock Park, and down below in Chimney Rock Village, you’ll want to visit numerous times. And the best part is that you can because the Park is open year-around and offers fun, educational, and interactive events every month.

If you’re planning a visit to Lake Lure or Chimney Rock Village, make sure you visit the Park, see the waterfall, and enjoy the views from the Chimney lookout – it will take your fun vacation to a whole new level!
